Welcome Back

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,

I am very pleased to be welcoming you all back after our summer break. I hope you have all had a wonderful time enjoying the weather together and are ready for a new year of learning.

This year marks the launch of Willow Bank’s bespoke curriculum, which all stakeholders were involved in designing. I hope the children will enjoy all aspects of their learning, thus further embedding their thinking skills using the hats and maps. You can access your childrens’ curriculum overviews on the website.

Willow Bank is very excited to introduce Willow, our wellbeing dog to the Willow Bank family. All the children have met Willow during the first three days of school and Willow will be visiting classes and working with small groups across the term as she settles into school. Please do read the letter that has been sent out today, as it informs you of the research and planning that led to our decision of having a wellbeing dog.

All parents will be receiving welcome letters from class teachers with details of the class timetables, please do ensure that your child’s PE kits are in school and both their PE kits and school uniforms are in line with the school uniform policy.

Pupils will also be receiving three guidance leaflets today- two of these are to help further understand the ‘Thinking School’ approach and one is to inform you of the sequences of teaching English, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (EGPS).

This year we have introduced ‘thunks’; thunks are “an enticing question about everyday things that stops you in your tracks and helps you to look at the world in a whole new light.” The importance is in children thinking and reasoning- there are no right or wrong answers- just children thinking deeper about an area identified in a thunk and being able to justify their thoughts in a group discussion. Children were shown this thunk and discussed this in assembly.

Parent workshops will be held across this year to guide and inform you of how you can support your children with their learning.

Please do read the parent handbook, which you will find on the school website, as it has the key dates and important information about the procedures and expectations of our school.

We look forward to working together with you across the year and seeing you all at the Family Learning Afternoons, where you will be able to see the learning that has taken place around each theme studied.

Please do remember to discuss the school values - which are Respect, Tolerance, Love of Learning, Pride and Teamwork - with your children, as they are key to the culture we are developing within our school community.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Malhi and the Willow Bank team
